Ace-Saginaw Paving Company was recently honored by the Asphalt Paving Association of Michigan (APAM) and the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) for the construction of an exceptional asphalt roadway paving project. The Asphalt Paving Awards Program is a cooperative effort between the Asphalt Paving Association of Michigan and the Michigan Department of Transportation to recognize excellence in asphalt pavement construction. In the December 2012 awards program, Ace-Saginaw Paving Company was the proud recipient of the "Award of Merit" in the Urban Street Category for the Saginaw St. project located in Grand Blanc, MI.

The five lane roadway was constructed in two courses with over 7,300 tons of MDOT 5E10 HMA Superpave Mix, produced at Ace-Saginaw Plant A1 located in Holly, MI. This project was ranked high in degree of difficulty due to the demanding project specifications designed to reduce the impact on the motoring public. These challenging specifications required all construction work to take place at night, part width, while maintaining heavy traffic volumes on the main artery through downtown Grand Blanc. Congratulations to all team members who helped build this award winning project, on-time, and most importantly, Safely!!

Challenge Detroit

Edw. C. Levy Co. is one of 30 companies participating in a new initiative, Challenge Detroit. This program is setting out to speed up the revitalization efforts that are happening all over the city by attracting young innovative leaders to Live, Work, Play and Give in and around the Detroit area for a year. The participants all live in Detroit, engage in organized social and cultural events, and work with their host companies Monday through Thursday. On Fridays, participants give to the city by collaborating with non-profit organizations, such as Tech Town and the United Way for Southeastern Michigan, on various initiatives ranging from Increasing Food Awareness to Innovation in Business and Economics. Challenge Detroit participants will have a positive impact on the city this year, and through their experiences they will be attracted to stay in the city, work in the city, and even start their own business in Detroit and by doing this create a positive influence that goes far beyond one year.

More than 900 people submitted applications to Challenge Detroit from around the world. Of those 900 it was narrowed down to 100 semifinalists who were then voted on by over 17,000 individuals.

Following this vote and more input from judges and host companies 66 finalists were invited to take part in a two day interview process to determine the 30 winners. During these two days the finalists experienced a whirlwind of activities which included interviews with 3 or 4 different companies, a mini- team challenge, a tour of the city, and a chance to talk with many of Detroit's most successful young leaders about their experiences.

Edw. C. Levy Co. interviewed 7 of these talented individuals and selected Sam Brennan to take a position in the Environmental Department. Sam is a graduate of Kalamazoo College with a degree in Anthropology and Sociology and recently finished his yearlong service with City Year Detroit. Sam has already started his work for Edw. C. Levy Co. as a summer intern.

St. Clair River Habitat Restoration

To help restore the habitat for some of Michigan's dwindling fish species in the St. Clair River delta area, Michigan Sea Grant and several partners are finishing nine fish spawning reefs.

Michigan Sea Grant, based in Ann Arbor, has established similar spawning grounds in the St. Clair and Detroit rivers. The organization is building three types of reefs: smooth, rounded river stone, broken limestone or a mixture of both.

The stone reefs are in the middle channel of the St. Clair River, away from the freighter path, which is in the south channel, and in deep enough water -- 25 to 30 feet -- to avoid boaters. Levy supplied the 4-6" round field stone and gravel from American Aggregates and the 4-8" angular limestone from the Wallace Stone Quarry in Bayport, Michigan.

Fulton Mill Service - Visibly Safer

Shawn Knapp, operator at Fulton Mill Service, was asked to work at a recent Cross Country meet in Ohio and Shawn was put in charge of parking cars for the guests attending. Shawn asked if there were any hi-visibility vests available so that people like himself could reduce the risk of injury while parking cars. Following the request the Athletic Director mentioned that the vests tended to grow legs and between the X-Country team practices and parking for other events the high school struggled to keep vests available. Shawn asked around and found that when training, the local Cross Country runners were concerned that cars may or may not have ample time to react to them being on the road due to low visibility early in the morning or at dusk.

Shawn knew the importance of the right PPE for safety. Putting his safety training to work, Shawn asked Fulton Mill Service to help. Thanks to Shawn, Fulton Mill Service donated 12 hi-visibility, lightweight vests to the local Cross Country team to better ensure that all team members are more visible and safer when training.

Duraberm

Always looking for new products for our customers, Levy offers Duraberm - a unique road base material.

Many rural roads and parking lots are made up of compacted sand and gravel. During the spring and rainy seasons these surfaces have a tendency to become muddy and sometimes impassable. Duraberm is specially designed to fix and repair these gravel roadways, parking lots and farm lanes.

Duraberm is a blend of electric arc furnace (EAF) slags generated at the steel mill. Once placed, watered and rolled, Duraberm produces a hard and durable roadway. Duraberm performs extremely well and has less dust than many other products.

With assistance from Levy Sales on the proper use and the best application for the product, public and county highway departments are eagerly using Duraberm for roadways, parking lots, equipment yards, farm roads and driveways.
