Slag Handling
Levy has specialized in handling slag since the company’s beginning in 1918. Current operations handle various slags including those generated from Blast Furnaces, Basic Oxygen Furnaces, and Electric Arc Furnaces. This also includes slag from ancillary operations such as desulphurization and ladle treatments.
The service begins by collecting the slags from the furnace operations. This is generally done in one of two ways. The first method is “Dig and Haul”. With this method a furnace discharges the slag into a pit directly beneath the furnace. Levy will then dig up the slag and transport it to another location where it will cool before processing. Under the second method, which was pioneered by Levy, the molten slag is poured into a slag pot. The pot is then transported by Levy to a remote dump station where the slag can safely be cooled and pre-treated before processing.
Once the slag has cooled sufficiently, it is processed through a slag plant to remove recoverable metallics and to size the slag into various products, which are determined by local market needs. The metallics can be returned to the mill or brokered for sale. The slag products are marketed for various construction purposes. Levy specializes in the marketing of slag products and recycles over 10 million tons of slag a year.
Levy provides the equipment and manpower necessary for basic mill furnace cleanup. The debris collected from the furnace can be processed into usable aggregates depending on the disposal practices of the mill.
Levy provides the required expertise to collect and process the mill scale from rolling mill operations. Levy can market this mill scale for reuse by others or can prepare it for reuse onsite.
Levy provides the necessary equipment and staff to collect and process various types of mill scrap. Processes include cutting and breaking scrap and screening to produce various sizes of scrap for return to the furnace. This processing includes tundish skulls, ladle skulls, scrap coils, revert scrap, crop ends, and other various scrap.
Levy provides scrap yard management including all material handling functions. Levy integrates with the mill’s process control to load scrap buckets, trucks or other conveyances with scrap mixes for the melt shop.
Levy provides robotic
slab scarfing utilizing the latest proprietary technology. The Levy process can provide significant yield savings over traditional manual scarfing techniques.
Utilizing Levy patented technology Levy can provide robotic,
drossless/burrless cutting and
slitting. These operations can be linked to caster processing to minimize material handling.
Utilizing its expertise in heavy equipment operations, Levy can provide various services from material handling, material logistics, sizing, screening, cutting, slab handling, coil handling, coal, coke, and ore management, or any other service that may require heavy equipment.
